A few weeks ago I had the privilege of flying in the Sentimental Journey WWII Bomber in Montrose. It’s based in Arizona and is one of only a handful still in the air. It’s an old plane. A little research and I discovered the first B-17s were built by Boeing in 1935. Then a few thousand more under a nationwide collaborative effort by Douglas and Lockheed. Only a few B-17s survive today, most at museums, and the few still flying featured at air shows. Most were scrapped at the end of the war.
Then came the news this morning of a fiery B-17 crash in Connecticut. At last word, at least 6-injuries were reported. The plane that crashed wasn’t the same plane I got to fly in. It was part of the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour. It’s very unsettling to consider folks like me were probably on that plane. I’m wishing all of them the best.
