In June of 1991 as a news director at KEXO in Grand Junction I trekked to Two Rivers Plaza to see a national education summit. Federal officials including Secretary of Education Bill Bennet were there discussing the future of education in the country. That happened in the morning. It was followed by a speech by President George H.W. Bush on the steps of the Old Mesa County Courthouse. Tall bleachers were set up along Rood Avenue, the road closed and police snipers positioned on the bank building across the street. Finally it was time for the president to speak. I saved one clip from the audio for all these years and it’s become a bit of a treasure for me. I managed to find the old cassette it’s on and got a co-worker to dig up an old player and transfer it to digital. Here’s one of my fondest reporting memories:
